(Paul Rux ran for municipal judge of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin.)
Rux Calls for Teen Court in Race for Judge
As Municipal Judge Paul Chavez steps down, two educators are vying for the position. Both candidates agree that the role of the municipal judge is to stop criminal behavior in young people before it starts.
Jodi Morey, 57, has lived in Mount Horeb since 1975. She feels the experience she gained working as municipal court clerk under three Mount Horeb judges has qualified her for the position.
"I am very familiar with the court system," said Morey, who taught elementary school for 31 years in Sauk City. "You have to be creative in order to overcome some of the difficulties people are facing. You have to really think about each case."
Paul Rux has lived in Mount Horeb for nearly two years. Rux has taught business ethics courses at Upper Iowa University since 1996.
Rux also believes creativity on the bench can help prevent recidivism. If elected, Rux would make it a priority to introduce student juries into the municipal courtroom.
"Outside of the courtroom, these peers might interact with offenders. Perhaps they would be able to enforce, through peer pressure, a curfew they had helped determine," said Rux.
"This is a way to create another resource in the community without costing the taxpayers anything."
